CHURCHES, CASTLES & CATHEDRALS
Eilean Donan Castle, Dornie, Kyle of Lochalsh.
Apparently the most photographed castle in the UK, and even on a cold damp afternoon in April there were tourists everywhere. I waited and waited until the clouds parted a little and then had to take several exposures to merge later to remove the plethora of bodies milling around. I’ve passed this place many times though to date have never ventured inside. For me the architecture of the outside of the castle and it’s stunning location could never be surpassed by the interior no matter how sumptuous it were.

On a very cold, wet and windy afternoon whilst on tour with M&M Photo Tours running round the highlands and islands of Scotland we came across the now derelict Gylen castle on the tiny island of Kerrera. We’d stopped at the lovely little tea garden at the South end of the island to take shelter from the elements and grab a spot of homemade soup to warm up and then headed off to explore the castle on our way back to the ferry. Some of the group had gone to investigate the castle itself, but I decided to take a more circuitous route down to the edge of the water and shoot back towards the ruins. It was incredibly slippery on the rocks underfoot and it was a struggle to keep the rubber feet on my tripod firmly secured on the ground in the wind.
